Incident at Morningside

A Fiction/Mystery Novel

by Dennis W. Daggett

Full Color Cover, 6″x9″ Trade Paperback
355 pages, $15.00

It began as an ordinary day in a high school like any other. But by the time vice-principal Aaron Jeffers arrived at work, a thoughtless teenage indiscretion had already launched a series of events that would shake educators, students, and the wider community to the core. Jeffers must coordinate the school crisis response with a police investigation. As secrets surface, he questions the very foundations of a system ultimately unable to fully protect those in its care. Incident at Morningside examines the impossible challenges faced by school administrators and staff: expanding expectations, pervasive criticism, and constant cultural change. Discover a world you only think you know. Discover the demanding, infuriating, vital, and dangerous world of Morningside High.

Dennis Daggett, Ph.D. was raised in the Great Northwest, graduating with a BA in Education from what was then Western Washington College of Education. He began teaching in California and then served as a junior high vice-principal and elementary school principal while earning an MA in School Administration from San Jose State University.

After 18 years on the front lines, he dropped out to get a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Oregon. He served as Director of Elementary Instruction for a year in the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District in Alaska followed by eight years as Associate Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction. He drove 4,753 miles from Alaska to New Jersey to serve as Superintendent of Schools in two school districts before retiring. He is proud that, over the course of his career, he taught in every grade level from kindergarten through graduate school.

After 22 years on the east coast, Dr. Daggett and Margaret, his educator wife, returned west in 2009 where they split the year between Summerlin, Sun City in Las Vegas, NV, and on Cain Lake near Sedro Woolley, WA. The colleges they attended make him a Viking-Spartan-Duck married to a Bulldog-Spartan-Duck. Go figure? They have had four children, two foster sons, and four grandchildren who are all above average.

Back cover quotes by Dr. Patch Adams and Jan Eliot:

“50 is formidable, no matter how you look at it. At 50 you feel young, but others may look at you as if you are old. I won’t say that doesn’t matter to me. But this book is a very sweet celebration of this age we are… or have been, or will be. Reading it is like a cup of sweet tea in the evening, lemonade on a hot afternoon, coffee to begin the day. Soothing, personal, comfortable. A true celebration.”
~Jan Eliot,
50-something, creator of the comic strip “Stone Soup”

“When a dream takes hold of you, what can you do? You can run with it, let it run your life, or let it go and think for the rest of your life about what might have been.”
~Patch Adams, MD,
medical visionary and author of Gesundheit!
